Review: Hotel Ceramica, Iasi
I had an overnight stay in Hotel Ceramica at short notice. I was in Iasi already and needed somewhere to stay close to a certain hospital and needed two en-suite rooms at a reasonable price with car parking. The car parking as particularly important for me as I had driven into Iasi earlier that day. Price was also important as we were only staying overnight and it was a practical trip rather than a leisurely one!
I booked online via my iPad on Booking.com when I was at the hospital. I liked the look of the hotel and it had the rooms I needed at a really good price and had parking. I booked the rooms Booking.com suggested which was a business single room (with apparently a mini bar and toaster) and a twin room. I was in a hurry and stressed so I didn’t look too closely at the confirmation email – my fault, I thought Booking.com has told me all!
When I got to the hotel, I saw that it looked like it was a converted block of the typical flats you get in Romanian cities. The way into the location was off a very busy main road and the entrance was very narrow and had cars all over. The taxis that I used later had great difficult getting out. There were a limited number of spaces (about 5 or 6), luckily for me there was one free so I parked my car and decided that it wouldn’t be going anywhere until I had checked out because I guessed I would never get another space!
Check-in was fine, but it seemed that when I queried the rooms they gave us, the receptionist said they were all the same (and sure enough, looking at the fire escape plans, they were), I didn’t check my confirmation to see what it should have been, which was my mistake. My room did have a fridge but there was nothing in it and no sign of a toaster either. Also, we were on the third floor with no lift – again something I should have checked.
I had to go downstairs to ask for a hairdryer and the ‘bar’ was actually just a fridge behind the reception – which wasn’t on because the beer I asked for was warm.
Next morning it turned out that I hadn’t booked breakfast either, a fact that (unlike most hotels) they did not query when I checked in and there wasn’t enough food for us to have any which wasn’t ideal.
So, all in all, the hotel was adequate for the price, the rooms were a good size and clean but the service was lacking, the parking very poor and the lack of lift not ideal. Also, there was a lot of building work going on outside and the maid seemed to think I’d like to hear it by leaving the window in the hall next to my room wide open. It was an OK stay in an emergency but unless I really wanted another budget stay I wouldn’t go back.
Pros: price, location (within a cheap taxi ride of the Palas), good size rooms, clean
Cons: limited parking, rooms not quite as advertised, adequate service, no lift
